Abstract  From the perspective of agency theory, using data of 478 listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2008~2016 as research object, this study employed the Poisson model to empirically test hypotheses. The results indicate that unabsorbed slack activates both exploitation innovation and exploration innovation. Meanwhile, absorbed slack activates exploitation innovation but suppresses exploratory innovation. CEO’s output functional experience strengthens the relationship between unabsorbed slack and exploitation innovation, while it weakens the relationship between unabsorbed slack and exploration innovation. Furthermore, CEO’s output functional experience strengthens the relationship between absorbed slack and exploitation innovation, while it has no significant effect on the relationship between absorbed slack and exploratory innovation.
