Abstract Based on the perspective of paradigm shift, this paper critically reviews the intergenerational evolution of management, finding that socioeconomic transition and scientific paradigm jointly drive management from classical management to modern management to postmodern management. Now the fourth-generation paradigm, holistic management, is emerging based on Chinese philosophy and management practices. Then it explores the characteristics, current situation, and future direction. This study contributes to the improvement of management theory and the development of Chinese management theory system, which provides new insights into managing technologyical innovation, cultivating world-class companies, constructing innovative nations and cross-culture management practices.
