Abstract The internationalization of Chinese management research relies on the development of the academic community. Of the many communities that contribute to the internationalization of Chinese management research, the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) is a significant one. Based on the review of the development of IACMR and its focus, this article, finds that three periods have been experienced by IACMR on internationalizing Chinese management research, and they are the period of ‘introducing empirical study’, the period of ‘emphasizing Chinese context’, and the period of ‘returning to scientific spirit’. This experience not only shows the focus of the Chinese management research academic community in the past, but also indicates the future direction of Chinese management research. After studying the growth of IACMR, this article suggests that all members of academic communities, namely academics, management schools, academic institutions, specialized academic organizations and journals, and so on, clarify their own duties, cooperate with each other, and work together towards the internationalization of Chinese management research.
