Abstract:In line with ego depletion theory, this study explored the relationship between leader forgiveness and abusive behavior, and examined the mediating role of resource depletion and the moderating effect of self-oriented motives. Using a questionnaire survey method, we find support for our hypotheses in a sample of 94 leaders and 353 subordinates. Results showed that resource depletion mediated the relationship between leader forgiveness and leader abusive behavior. Self-oriented motives moderated the relationship between leader forgiveness and resource depletion, such that the positive effect of leader forgiveness on resource depletion was stronger when self-oriented motives were higher. Additionally, self-oriented motives moderated the mediating effect of resource depletion on the relationship between leader forgiveness and leader abusive behavior, with a stronger effect when self-oriented motives were higher.
