Abstract Drawing on goal orientation theory, this study explores how answer quality and respondent social capital in technical Q&A communities influence refiners’ learning-oriented and performance-oriented motivations to drive knowledge refinement behavior, and further examines the moderating role of question quality characteristics. An empirical analysis of 74,474 Q&A data from Stack Overflow yields the following findings: a significant U-shaped relationship exists between answer quality and knowledge refinement behavior. Respondent social capital has a significant positive impact on knowledge refinement behavior. Question difficulty weakens the influence of answer quality and respondent social capital on knowledge refinement behavior, while question popularity amplifies their positive effects.
