Abstract This research takes SUPCON’s EPA technical Standard as an example to carry out case study on the establishment path of independent international standards of latecoming enterprises in China. The findings reveal that fields without a dominant standard but with certain technology basis are favorable for latecoming enterprises to develop their strong points and win a favorable position. As for the competitive strategy, the masses of users and the large potential market in China are valuable resources for latecoming enterprises to make up for their technical deficiencies with the market superiority. It must be realized that the preemption of market opportunities should be considered ahead of making profits. Besides, it is preferable to choose industrial domains with more preferential government policies, and to carry out cooperation with others through the form of strategic alliance so as to effectively reduce costs and accelerate the popularization of the standard.
