Abstract As the world is increasingly globalizing, the importance of indigenous management research is also on the rise. Nonetheless, management research in China is primarily based on the importation of Western theories, and indigenous management research is lacking. To promote indigenous management research, the main purposes of this paper are to explore the objectives of indigenous management research, how to effectively develop indigenous management, and the directions for developing indigenous management. We propose four major paths for indigenous management research: developing original, universal, and impactful theories, undertaking monocultural or crosscultural indigenous research, and adopting the synergistic interplay between etic and emic approaches.
