Abstract Based on role theory and three-wave longitudinal data from 241 newcomers over three consecutive years, this study explored the relationship between leader coaching behavior and newcomers’ person-environment fit. The findings revealed that the level of leader coaching behavior at an earlier time point positively affected the subsequent levels of newcomers’ person-organization fit and person-job fit. However, the level of newcomers’ person-organization fit and person-job fit at an earlier time point did not significantly influence the subsequent levels of leader coaching behavior. Changes in leader coaching behavior are positively reciprocated with changes in newcomers’ person-organization fit and person-job fit.
