Abstract The paper has adopted the theory of intertemporal choice to interpret the impact of the stability of the faculty group on the radical innovation of basic research and the incremental innovation of basic research. By analyzing the panel data of 31 provinces of China, the paper has found out that the group stability of senior professional title faculty has a positive effect on both the radical innovation of basic research and the incremental innovation of basic research, while the group stability of non-senior professional title faculty does not have a significant effect on the radical innovation of basic research, and has a positive effect on the incremental innovation of basic research. Moreover, the economic development level positively moderates the relationship between the group stability of senior professional title faculty and the radical innovation of basic research, and negatively moderates the relationship between the group stability of senior professional title faculty and the incremental innovation of basic research. Finally, the economic development level has a positive moderation effect on the relationship between the group stability of non-senior professional title faculty and the radical innovation of basic research, while the economic development level has a non-significant moderation effect on the relationship between the group stability of non-senior professional title faculty and the incremental innovation of basic research.
