Abstract The study selects A-share listed manufacturing companies from 2007 to 2021 as research samples to investigate the impact and mechanism of the embeddedness of industry association on solving the dilemma of digital transformation of enterprises. This study finds that the embeddedness of industry association significantly promotes enterprise digital transformation through mechanisms of resource empowerment and legitimacy perception. Meanwhile, TMT digital knowledge and TMT functional background heterogeneity strengthen this promotion through the path of resource empowerment, while industry digitalization level and regional marketization level strengthen this promotion through the path of legitimacy perception. Further research shows that the embeddedness of industry association enhances enterprise digital transformation mainly through three paths: reducing financing constraints, improving absorptive capacity, and reducing the perception of economic policy uncertainty. Furthermore, this impact is more significant in private enterprises, non-government affiliated enterprises and small-scale enterprises.
