Abstract To enrich the study of leadership in the digital and intelligent era and pave new paths for organizational management research such as digital transformation, this study explores the connotation, structural dimensions, and emergence mechanisms of digital leadership by integrating the complex adaptive systems theory. The findings reveal that digital leadership encompasses the influence process of digital vision, digital skills and digital implementation, with their main influencing factors including national policies, technological changes and the traits of key leaders. Moreover, by applying the “stimulus-response” model of complex adaptive systems theory, the emergence mechanisms of digital leadership is unveiled and constructed, comprising four stages: receiving stimuli, evolutionary learning, emergence and adaptive response.
