Abstract Based on transaction cost theory, this study explores the underlying mechanism through which SME(Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) digital capability affects supply chain financing performance by reducing opportunism, and analyzing the contextual role of asset-specific and relationship-specific investments in the relationship between SME digital capability and opportunism. The results of the empirical analysis on a sample of 384 SMEs show that: The digital capability of SMEs positively affects the supply chain financing performance; opportunism has an intermediary role between the digital capability of SMEs and the financing performance of the supply chain; both asset-specific investment and relationship-specific investment can enhance the digital capability of SMEs and reduce the risk of opportunism. However, when higher asset-specific investment and higher relationship-specific investment are combined, it will, to a certain extent, replace the inhibitory effect of SMEs’ digital capabilities on opportunism.
