Abstract Through the empirical test of 412 enterprises, the study discusses the effect of design thinking on business model innovation (BMI) in the digital intelligence environment, and identifies its boundary conditions. The research shows that trial-and-error and evaluation of design thinking have significant positive effects on the novelty and efficiency of BMI respectively, while iteration of design thinking have significant positive effects on the novelty and efficiency of BMI simultaneously. The positive relationship between trial and error and the novelty of BMI, as well as the positive relationship between iteration and the novelty and efficiency of BMI, is regulated by the inverted U-shape of the digital intelligence environment. However, the inverted U-shaped moderating effect of the digital intelligence environment on the positive relationship between assessment and the efficiency of BMI is not significant.
