Abstract  Based on a systematical review of 184 studies on charismatic leadership published on important international and Chinese management journals, this study reviews the disputes about charismatic leadership research, analyzes the concept, sums up the measurement tools of charismatic leadership, distinguishes charismatic leadership and transformational leadership, and summarizes the research phases, influence factors, outcomes, influence mechanisms as well as boundary conditions of charismatic leadership. On this basis, this study proposes that future research should further work on the conceptualization and measurement of charismatic leadership, investigate the influence mechanism and the dark side of charismatic leadership more thoroughly, and explore charismatic leadership in the new context of the organization and the Chinese indigenous context.
