Abstract  Based on the self-determination theory, this study analyzes the questionnaire data collected from 422 gig workers at two time points and explores the mechanism of self-leadership on emotional labor strategies. The results show that gig worker self-leadership negatively impacts surface acting and positively impacts deep acting through psychological needs satisfaction, respectively. The perceptions of algorithmic transparency positively moderates the relationship between self-leadership and psychological needs satisfaction, and positively moderates the mediating roles of psychological needs satisfaction between self-leadership and the two emotional labor strategies.
