Abstract To optimize the organization and implementation process of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scientist (EYS) Scheme (HK & Macau), based on its application situation in 2019~2020, we investigated and analyzed researchers’ participation rate, funding management and suggestions, and had an in-depth understanding of researchers’ real demands. By conducting a questionnaire survey on 275 scholars from eight supporting institutions in Hong Kong and Macao, we found that the scheme gained a high degree of support and recognition among researchers in Hong Kong and Macao. They had high willingness to participate and were satisfied with the work and contribution of the NSFC in the process of organizing and implementing. According to the survey results, most researchers suggested further optimizing the fund application process and improving the expert evaluation criteria.
