Abstract In line with ego depletion theory, this study explored the relationship between leader forgiveness and abusive behavior, and examined the mediating role of resource depletion and the moderating effect of self-oriented motives. Using a questionnaire survey method, we find support for our hypotheses in a sample of 94 leaders and 353 subordinates. Results showed that resource depletion mediated the relationship between leader forgiveness and leader abusive behavior. Self-oriented motives moderated the relationship between leader forgiveness and resource depletion, such that the positive effect of leader forgiveness on resource depletion was stronger when self-oriented motives were higher. Additionally, self-oriented motives moderated the mediating effect of resource depletion on the relationship between leader forgiveness and leader abusive behavior, with a stronger effect when self-oriented motives were higher.
