Abstract Participants join the innovation ecosystem to create value with core enterprises, which can effectively alleviate the constraints of shortage of innovation resources; however, as ecological participants, they face the practical problem of “how to rely on core enterprises to obtain external resources without losing independent competitive advantages”. In this regard, based on the social embeddedness theory, this study focuses on the organizational situation of the innovation ecosystem, selects four typical participants in the “smart home ecosystem” led by Midea as case samples, conducts multi-case analysis, and excavates the participants’ ability and network path to achieve resource acquisition. The study found that ecological participants (intermediaries and complementors) have two resource needs, namely technology-oriented needs and market-oriented needs; for different needs, corresponding combined network embeddedness strategies can be adopted to achieve mutual benefit, symbiosis and development among multiple actors.
