Abstract Surrounding self-determination theory, this study explores the impact of gamification goal-orientation (learning goals vs. performance goals) in virtual public health training system on users’ training performance (subjective and objective) and their adherence tendency, and verifies the proposed research model through empirical experiments. The results show that different goal-orientation can significantly affect the inner motivations of public health training system users, including perceived autonomy, competence and relevance, and ultimately affect user training performance and compliance tendency. Besides, while under time pressure, users in the learning-oriented goal training environment have better stress tolerance in terms of personal perceived competence than those in the performance-oriented goal training environment.
