Abstract his study examines the impact of ISO 14001 environmental certification on firms’ total factor productivity using empirical data of heavily polluting enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares from 2008 to 2019. The results show that ISO 14001 environmental certification can significantly improve firms’ total factor productivity. The exploration of the influence mechanism finds that the influence mechanism of ISO 14001 environmental certification on firms’ total factor productivity lies in promoting the technological progress of enterprises, but not in optimizing the resource allocation of enterprises, which means the incentive effect of ISO 14001 environmental certification is strong while the constraint effect is weak. The analysis of the regulatory environment and competitive environment finds that the positive effect of ISO 14001 environmental certification on firms’ total factor productivity is more significant when environmental standards are higher, environmental supervision is stronger and market competition is stronger.
