Abstract Nonstandard workers and formal workers constitute the employment diversity in the workplace. Using a literature review approach, this paper systematically analyzes the research on nonstandard workers in the management area. It reveals that the extant studies have explored both the customer and agency organizations’ influences on nonstandard workers, the nonstandard workers’ dual perceptions in the workplace, and the interactions between nonstandard workers and formal workers. Future research should leverage multiple perspectives from within-individual level, team and supervisor level, to organization level to clarify the factors affecting nonstandard workers’ behaviors and attitudes. Future studies can also analyze nonstandard workers’ career path based on theories of career development, as well as incorporate the social context to discuss nonstandard employee issues.
