Leader Anger Expression and Leadership Effectiveness: Literature Review,Theoretical Extension, and Future Research Directions

Abstract  This study presents a qualitative review regarding the effect of leader anger expression on leadership effectiveness, discusses the conceptual issues of anger expression and organizes the major theoretical perspectives and existing empirical findings of leader anger expression’s impacts on leader effectiveness. Based on this qualitative review, a theoretical framework of leader anger expression is proposed, which identifies four different types of leader anger expression and their effects on leadership effectiveness. Finally, this research discusses the theoretical and practical implications of this theoretical framework and offered several future research directions in relation to the research of organizational behavior and human resource management in the context of the digital economy.
