Abstract Due to the tensions and contradiction in the daily behaviors and interactions of users in collaborative workplaces (CWs), its benefits often fail to materialize. The present study explored the inconsistency among prototype design, user explanation and work practice by paying attention to the social relations and reveals the tensions evolution in CWs. Adopted the literature review method, combined with the institutional theory and autonomy-control paradox, this review identified the tensions that surface in CWs research findings: flexibility vs. structure, fluidity vs. stability, and accessibility vs. privacy. When exploring the balance mechanism of tensions in CWs, the present research linked them with the institutional entrepreneurship, institutional practice and institutional complexity in the perspective of neo-institutional theory. Finally, this review concluded by suggesting some approaches to deal with tensions and improve the management efficiency in CWs.
