Abstract  Based on the strategic cognition theory, this study empirically investigates the relationship between entrepreneur’s prior industry experience and business model innovation and comprehend how three dimensions of cognitive style-Originality, Efficiency, and Rule Governance-moderate this relationship. Business model innovation from the perspective of cognition explores the trend of business model innovation from the individual level; in this case, an entrepreneur’s previous work experience becomes an important mechanism for business model innovation. The study is supported by questionnaire research, and finds that entrepreneurs with more prior inside-industry work experience weaken the degree of business model innovation, while entrepreneurs with more prior outside-industry work experience strengthen the degree of business model innovation. Furthermore, three dimensions of cognitive style have moderating effects on the relationship between previous work experience and business model innovation.
