Abstract  Drawing on the social cognitive theory, using data from 1 912 employees in 307 companies in different provinces of China, the paper further explores the relationship of abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior and how the relationship is affected by other factors. Based on the empirical results, abusive supervision is significantly and positively related to counterproductive work behavior, and psychological contract violation mediates the relationship of abusive supervision and counterproductive work behavior, and self-construal moderates the relationships of abusive supervision and psychological contract violation/counterproductive work behavior. The paper enriches our understanding of the influencing mechanism of abusive supervision on counterproductive work behavior, and provides a new perspective for future research.
