Abstract Team-based work structure has been adopted by many corporations. Accordingly, how to promote team performance has attracted more and more attention from management practitioners and scholars. The behaviors of team leader are the key influencer of team performance. However, related research examining the effect and mechanism of team leadership on team performance is limited. This study explores the relationship between team-based differentiated empowering leadership and team performance to broaden the literature of team leadership and team performance. Samples from 92 teams supported that differentiated empowering leadership was negatively related to team performance via intra-team interactional justice climate. Moreover, team power distance was found to be the boundary condition of such relationship as discussed above.
