Abstract Promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) demands a certain degree of consensus on the understanding of CSR. However, a review on articles about corporate social responsibility definition written by Chinese scholars since the beginning of 21 century reveals that till now no needed consensus has been reached by Chinese scholars. Significantly different views exist regarding questions like “is corporate social responsibility a partial responsibility or comprehensive responsibility?” and “is corporate moral responsibility the core of CSR”. To reach necessary degree of consensus, correcting wrong understanding of the necessity and possibility of needed consensus, focusing on key questions, clarifying fundamental concepts, assessing the possible consequences of different definitions of CSR, and encouraging academic debate are needed.
