Abstract  This study aims to explore the dynamics between variable payment strength and employee innovative behavior with status competitive motivation and creative selfefficiency based on cognitive evaluation theory. The results suggest that there is 1) a curvilinear or reversed Ushape relationship between variable payment strength and employee innovative behavior, 2) a significant difference while examining different type of status competitive motivation on employee innovative behavior, and 3) a threeway interaction among variable payment strength, status competitive motivation and creative selfefficiency, which can improve employee innovative behavior greatly. Also, the study is helpful in providing theoretical foundation and managerial implication to the issue regarding how to trigger innovative behavior by designing variable payment strength.
Key wordsvariable payment strength      innovative behavior      status competitive motivation      creative selfefficiency
