Abstract This paper explores the path of innovation performance improvement and evolution based on the perspective of organizational archetype and the balance mode of absorptive capacity through longitudinal case study of four small and mediumsized manufacturing enterprises. Our research result shows that, in different phases of technological capabilities, the evolution of organization archetype plays an important role in the innovation performance promotion of small and mediumsized manufacturing enterprises through the impact on the balance mode of absorption capacity changing from ambidexterity to vacillation, and presents three types of mechanism, two evolution paths of innovation performance improvement: beginning with marketdriven archetype or abilitydriven archetype and two types of balance mode of absorptive capacity.
