Abstract Taking subcontract manufacturer of SF aircraft as a case, this paper discusses the feature and cause of the evolution of aviation complex product innovation ecosystem(ACPIE), and the trajectory of innovation ecosystem affecting its core enterprise innovation. Through the case study, there are two research findings. Firstly, we find CPIE based on taking subcontract manufacturer of civil aircraft as the core enterprise has experienced three stages consisting of subcontract production of aircraft parts, large parts manufacturing, designing and manufacturing with the risk cooperation. Secondly, the core enterprise is confronted with different innovation challenges in each stage: the innovation challenge of its upstream component suppliers is from low, medium to high level; the innovation challenge of customers is from low, medium to medium level; but downstream complementors discloses the high level of the innovation challenge. This study reveals that the innovation challenge of both components and complement profoundly influences the core enterprise innovation of aviation complex products in the ecosystem; the dynamic relationship between client and component suppliers is the key elements of driving the innovation ecosystem evolution. Analyzing the interaction of the core enterprise and other elements in the innovation ecosystem is also conducted.
