Abstract Set the alliance networks in Telecommunication Industry as the research object, this paper introduces network fragmentation to identify the focal nodes in the sample periods, and analyzes its formation, functional evolution and influencing factors with time series data. Results show that path dependency and firms’ technological levels are the key to the formation of focal nodes in the alliance networks and the focal nodes’ formation is significantly influenced by the preferential attachment mechanism.
