Abstract The patent license activity represents the flow of knowledge. This paper analyses the patent license network to evaluate the knowledge flow capability of “985 Universities”, builds the two-dimensional matrix of “985 Universities”of the invention authorized rate and the license rate, and studies the whole and individual knowledge flow networks of these universities. The study shows that: the engineering colleges have more knowledge flow capability than the comprehensive universities, Xi’an Jiaotong University and Tianjin University have the strongest knowledge flow capability in all these universities in China and the number of patent license has the positive correlation with the knowledge flow breadth.
