Abstract Based on Resourcebasis Theory, this paper builds a model of interactions among alliance types, enterprise competence including exploitation and exploration competence, and innovation modes with structural equation modeling. The sample covers 500 manufacturing firms in Chongqing, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Shanghai, Xian and Chengdu. The results indicate that marketing resource provided by market alliance is conducive to exploitation competence and technological resource provided by technology alliance has significant positive effect on exploration competence. Another important finding is exploitation competence has positive effect on incremental innovation and the exploration competence has significant positive effect on radical innovation. The results also show that marketing resource is associated with incremental innovation while technological resource is helpful to radical innovation.
