Relationship between Social Capital, Organizational Learning and Enterprise Upgrading:
The Empirical Study on OEMs in the Pearl River Delta |

Abstract Upgrading is the process of the stepwise development of the manufacturing skills of OEMs from simple to more complicated tasks, which can be regarded as a highly effective approach for supporting competitive advantage. This paper regards organizational learning as a process to enhance the technical capacity and to realize enterprise upgrading. The process of OEMs’ upgrading from organizational learning includes knowledge acquisition from partners, knowledge processing in OEMs, knowledge application in OEMs, and so forth. In addition, organizational learning is also affected by OEMs’ resources, which are defined in this article as social capital. This paper divides the upgrading into process upgrading, product upgrading and functional upgrading, and explores empirically the research of the relationship among social capital, supplier involvement, and upgrading. The results show: i) OEMs’ social capital has a positive effect on OEMs’ organizational learning; ii) organizational learning has a positive effect on OEMs’ process upgrading and product upgrading and iii) Organizational learning also has a positive effect on OEMs’ functional upgrading.
