Abstract Based on the panel data of 278 prefecture-level cities from 2010 to 2020, this study takes the green data center pilot implemented by the Chinese government in 2015 as a quasi-natural experiment, applying the double machine learning model to explore the internal mechanisms and multi-dimensional policy effects of green digital infrastructure on different types of green innovation. The study finds that green digital infrastructure effectively stimulates urban green innovation and shows obvious substantive green innovation preferences. The mechanism test shows that green digital infrastructure can indirectly drive the development of green innovation by improving energy efficiency, curbing pollution emissions, attracting digital talents and encouraging digital entrepreneurship. Further analysis shows that the green innovation effect of green digital infrastructure shows the heterogeneous empowerment characteristics of high-quality development zones>non-high-quality development zones, digital economic agglomeration zones>non-digital economic agglomeration zones and non-resource-based cities>resource-based cities.
