The Mechanisms of Growth Need Strengthen Influences on Employees’ Innovative Behavior

Abstract  Based on the self-determination theory, this study analyses data from 367 dyads of two-stage questionnaires of employees and their immediate supervisors, and empirically tests the mechanisms of individual growth need strengthen (GNS) influences on employees’ innovative behavior, especially focusing on the indirect effect of creative self-efficacy, the moderating effect of perceived insider status cognition, and the moderated indirect effect of creative self-efficiency. The results show that: there is a positive relationship between GNS and employee innovative behavior. Specifically, GNS indirectly drives employee innovation behavior through the mediation of creative self-efficacy. Perceived insider status cognition significantly moderates the indirect effect of creative self-efficiency. Specifically, compared with the lower insider status cognition, the indirect effect of creative self-efficiency will increase more obviously when the perceived insider status cognition is higher, meanwhile, the relationship between GNS and employees’ innovative behavior will increase accordingly.
