Abstract Drawing on experience learning theory, this study discussed the impact of failure learning on breakthrough innovation, and investigated the mechanism of management attention and external knowledge search by collecting 313 enterprise questionnaires in high-tech industries. The results show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between failure learning at the individual level and breakthrough innovation, and failure learning at the organizational level has obviously positive effect on breakthrough innovation. Moreover, external knowledge search has positive moderating effect on the relationship between failure learning and breakthrough innovation at the organizational level, and managers’ attention has negative moderating effect on the relationship between failure learning and breakthrough innovation at the organizational level.
