Abstract This paper systematically studied the main influencing factors and mechanism of FDI knowledge transfer through analyzing the typical cases. The cases analysis results showed that the prerequisite of FDI knowledge transfer through enterprises derivatives are entrepreneurial teams’ shared visions, “collective memory” recovery, social networks’ inheritance of FDI enterprises, and etc., The obstacles encountered are low efficiency of knowledge transfer led to the conflict between new and old employees and knowledge transfer termination caused by loss of core technical staff. Through cases analysis, we also found that knowledge transfer also needed favorable conditions on time (institutional and industry environment), geography (FDI embedded clusters) and people (core R & D team with extensive experience in the FDI enterprises).
