Abstract This study attempts to test the direct effects of employee altruism on team cohesion, and examine the mediating effects of employee initiative on the relationships between employee altruism and team cohesion by using data from a sample of 369 employees from 6 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing etc. The results reveal that employee altruism is positively associated with team cohesion, and employee initiative mediates the relationship between employee altruism and team cohesion. The empirical results provide important implications for the team culture built in the companies.
