Abstract   To take stock of the progress in leader succession research, the author analyzes 16 empirical studies published in the 12 international leading management journals from 2005 to 2010. Based on Kesner and Giambatista's model of literature research, the paper identifies the key problems, methods, and results in the research on leader succession. This analysis shows some advances but also identifies many gaps in both theory and methods. Finally, it provides specific suggestions for future indigenous research on leader succession in China.
