Abstract This paper studies one case of local industrial selforganization and compares it with another case from the U.S. We find that trust in a third party helps increase the reliability of a monitoring mechanism, especially when this third party also plays the role of arbitrator. In addition, informal sanctions in a small closed network of selforganized associations are the key for success for local industries using selfmonitoring.
