Abstract Using resourcebased view(RBV) of the firm as a theoretical foundation, we aim at finding out the impact of the complementarities between business skills and technical skills of IT staff on the firm’s competitive advantage. Based on literature review, a concept model mapping the linkage of the capabilities and its complementarities of IT staff to the enterprise performance is set up. Through the survey of 300 Chinese companies, the statistics implies that the IT staff’s technical skills and business skills both have significant positive correlation with the enterprise performance and the two capabilities are significantly complementary to each other. The technical skills distinguish IT staff from other business counterparts, and the business skills help IT staff understand how to utilize the strategic potential of IT to support and shape businesses. The research results indicate that the synergy between the two kinds of skills would further improve enterprise performance.
