Abstract The papers in the Comments section of Chinese Journal of Management have raised questions about the direction of management development. While the management studies in the west is setting up dual system, academic research and enterprise practice, in China, three paths including academic research, consultancy and enterprise practice apart from each other. How to make them become ‘iron triangle’ has impact on the direction of management development in China. The analysis of Peter Senge, a consultant, helps us obtain a clearer view about the relationship between consulting and academic research. Academic research is root and the pursuit of management studies and practicing and philosophy thinking vitalize academic research. The contentions will benefit the formation and perfection of academic community; management academia should take Chineseforeign academic contention as an example, and carry on the past and open a way for the future in order to establish a good foundation for the development of management in China. As a platform, Chinese Journal of Management plays an important role in this regard.
