Abstract The debates on western management education include five aspects: rigor vs. relevance from the perspective of research orientation; use value vs. exchange value from the perspective of academic evaluation; teaching oriented vs. research-oriented from the academic orientation;intellectuality-centered vs. market-centered from the perspective of cultivation objective; standardization vs. diversity from the perspective of internationalization. The paper discusses the debates and their implications to Chinese business schools. The paper argues that to Chinese business schools, it is important to pay attention to the balance between the rigor and the relevance,the development of indigenous management research, reform of academic appraisal systems, the establishment of teaching-oriented education, the reconstruction of humanistic spirits and the creation of differentiated competitive advantages.
