Abstract: Based on the quasi-natural experiment of the pilot policy for innovation and application in supply chain management, this study investigates how the construction of an intelligent supply chain affects the division of labor among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The results show that the construction of intelligent supply chains promotes specialization among SMEs, primarily through reducing information costs and enhancing innovation capabilities. This effect is more pronounced in regions with lower levels of marketization and weaker legal environments. Additionally, the positive impact of intelligent supply chain construction on SME specialization is stronger when the proportion of R&D personnel in the enterprise is higher and government subsidies are more substantial. The study also finds that the positive influence is more significant in situations with higher supplier and customer concentration. As intelligent supply chain construction progresses and the level of specialization among SMEs increases, their sustainable development capacity is continuously enhanced.
