The Impact of the Use of Enterprise Social Media Platforms on Organizational Identification of Employees from the Comparative Perspective of Online and Offline Social Networks

Abstract:Based on social network theory, two independent studies are conducted to explore the mechanisms through which the use of enterprise social work platforms affects employee organizational identification from the comparative perspective of online and offline relationship networks. Study 1 employs a whole network analysis method to evaluate a management consulting firm with 50 employees and demonstrates that employees can establish an online interactive community network that is similar to or even superior to their offline community through the enterprise social work platform. Building on the understanding of how enterprise social work platforms influence the development of employees’ online social networks, Study 2 investigates the issue from the perspective of the functionalities these platforms offer. Using the ego-network analysis method and a questionnaire survey of 315 employees, this research further explores how these online platform features impact employees’ work experience and organizational perception. The findings indicate that, for online employees, both online and offline social network features collectively influence their work meaningfulness and organizational identification.
