Abstract:This paper explores the essential differences in the role of leadership and power in influencing employees. In doing so, we expand the theoretical understanding of the nature of authoritarian leadership. Our analyses provide evidence that leadership is the process of motivating followers to proactively achieve future goals through building common goals between leaders and followers. However, authoritarian behaviors differ from the act of leading as we show that such actions rely on formal power to influence subordinates. Hence, our study concludes that authoritarian “leadership” is not a type of leadership and should not be categorized as a leadership behavior.
