Abstract:This study conducts a longitudinal case study of Xiaomi Company on “what the legitimacy spillover strategy of the eco-enterprises is” and “how the eco-enterprises help member enterprises to acquire legitimacy through the implementation of legitimacy spillover strategy in the process of the evolution of the external situation.” The results show that the legitimacy spillover strategy of eco-enterprises includes two types—“exploitation” and “exploration”. The results also show that the characteristics of the enterprise innovation ecosystem can be described by two dimensions—“technology overlap among subjects” and “structural consistency among subjects” which can trigger the legitimacy spillover strategy of eco-enterprises, then determine the category of attribute substitution and the direction of legitimacy spillover, and finally influence the result of legitimacy spillover.
