Development of Usability Checklist for Embedded Information Systems：A Case Study

Abstract：To evaluate the usability of embedded information systems in military domain, this study proposes a development framework of usability checklist combining with the characteristics of designs and tasks. The elements and dimensions of design are established based on the framework of usability problem taxonomy, and the set of evaluation principles is built. And then the usability checklist is proposed by matching design elements and evaluation principles, and the performance of the proposed usability checklist is tested through a case study. The results show that the proposed checklist is with better thoroughness and validity compared with heuristic evaluation and Purdue Usability Testing Questionnaire. And the checklist is more appropriate in the contexts of usability evaluation of embedded information systems. The results also verify indirectly the essential role and feasibility of the proposed development framework of usability checklist. And it also verifies the need and value of developing specific usability checklist based on domain knowledge.
