Institutional Support, Task Focused Strategic Leadership Behaviors and Organizational Performance: An Empirical Study Based on Private Enterprises in the Transition Economy
Abstract:The study proposes a research model of the effect of institutional support on organizational performance through the mediating effect of task focused strategic leadership behaviors and the moderating effect of dysfunctional competition. Large scale questionnaire surveys on senior leaders in 155 private enterprises in 9 cities in China were conducted, and finally 255 valid samples data were obtained. Confirmatory factor analysis, hierarchical moderated regression and simple slope analysis were used for analysis. The results show that institutional support obviously strengthens organizational performance, and task focused strategic leadership behaviors has partially played a mediating role between them; dysfunctional competition acts as a mediated moderator which moderates the relationship between institutional support and organizational performance, and dysfunctional competition negatively moderates the relationship between institutional support and task focused strategic leadership behaviors. Theoretically, the paper extends research literatures in areas of institutional support and strategic leadership behavior. Practically, this study offers private enterprises a practical guidance for the implementation of task focused strategic leadership behaviors under the institutional support in the transition economy.
